Tasty and Healthy - November 1, 2012

Greetings! Happy World Vegan Day! We will share a few vegan recipes. To the left is a photo of our green bean fields.

As always, we hope this week's post finds you and your family doing well. Our hearts go out to all those who have been adversely affected by Super Storm Sandy. Many people from the region follow our weekly updates and recipes. We hope your lives are soon returned to a comfortable status quo.

This week only - Green Bean fields are open for U-Pick! All the information is Here. Price Reduction for the 1/2 bushel! We are selling the 1/2 bushel U-Pick green beans for $10 this season. The whole bushel is the regular bargain price of $18. Fields will be open through Sunday, as long as there are beans. Feel free to PHONE the farm to check on quantities.

Presently we are harvesting our pesticide-free Yellow Summer Squash and Zucchini! We've been in the fields harvesting way before we anticipated!

Featured Fruit:

The Avocado
aka
The Alligator Pear

Even though they are fruits, avocados contain a lot of a fat (between 71 to 88% of their total calories - about 20 times the average for other fruits). However, the 30 grams of fat boast a 20 grams of health-promoting monounsaturated fats, especially oleic acid.

A medium-sized avocado contains as much fat as a quarter-pound burger. Nutritionists say the monounsaturated fat in an avocado is the "good" kind that actually lowers cholesterol levels. Because of this new understanding, the U.S. government revised its official nutrition guidelines to urge Americans to eat more avocados.

For more nutritional information please visit our webpage: The Alligator Pear

Currently planted on the farm, but not yet ready for harvest:

  • Eight-ball Zucchini (our speciality)
  • Yellow Zucchini
  • Turnips
  • Pole Beans
  • Yellow Beans
  • Red and White Swiss Chard (another specialty)
  • Kale
  • Broccoli
  • Mustard Greens
  • 5,000 collard plants! (biggest seller)

It will be another 40-70 days before these are ready for harvest.
The Kale and Swiss Chard required replanting due to the amount of rain in October. They should be ready in 90 days.

If interested in SHELLED black-eye peas please phone the farm to place an order. Peas are in our standard two pound bag. $8 per bag.

As always, please feel free to phone the farm for special requests or special orders. We'll do everything we can to accommodate you. If you need something from the Farmers Market in Plant City, it is best to phone by Wednesday afternoon.
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services visits to our farm regularly to test our soil and plants. For more information about our farming techniques, and the testing we undergo, please click here
